UPTIME

UPTIME is a single-file browser game about surviving a datacenter night shift. Incidents appear across a live rack topology, and you need to choose the right response before timers expire.

Play

Open uptime-incident-game.html in a browser, or serve the repo locally:

python3 -m http.server 8000

Then visit http://localhost:8000/uptime-incident-game.html.

Objective

Survive the full shift with at least 70% fleet health remaining. Correct fixes resolve incidents and build score. Wrong fixes cost time, health, and points. Missed incidents can knock racks offline and cascade pressure through the fleet.

Difficulty

  • Easy: 01:30 shift, slower incidents, up to 2 active alerts
  • Normal: 02:00 shift, balanced pacing, up to 3 active alerts
  • Hard: 03:00 shift, faster incidents, up to 4 active alerts

Incidents

The game includes operational scenarios such as CPU spikes, disk full events, service crashes, DDoS traffic, brute-force logins, bad deploys, DNS misroutes, packet loss, critical CVEs, leaked SSL keys, and mail deliverability issues.

Each incident has one correct response and multiple plausible wrong responses, with debrief lessons shown after mistakes or missed alerts.

Development

This repo is intentionally small:

  • uptime-incident-game.html contains all HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • There is no build step, package manager, test runner, or framework.
  • Google Fonts are loaded from the network; otherwise the game has no runtime dependencies.

Key gameplay code lives in the inline script constants and functions: NODES, EDGES, DIFFICULTIES, ALERT_TYPES, freshState(), spawnAlert(), tick(), startGame(), and endGame().
